About Machine Learning

Machine learning is the study of computer systems and algorithms that automatically improve performance by learning from data. It is a highly interdisciplinary field that brings together techniques from a variety of engineering and mathematical disciplines, including in particular computer science, statistics, and mathematical optimization, in order to analyze complex data and learn predictive models from it. Indeed, machine learning techniques are already being used with success in a variety of domains, for example in computer vision to develop face recognition systems, in computational biology to discover new genes, and in drug discovery to prioritize chemical structures for screening. With the increasing amounts of data being generated in diverse fields such as astronomical sciences, health and life sciences, financial and economic modeling, climate modeling, and even defense, the field of machine learning will provide increasingly important tools for analyzing and learning predictive models from data in the 21st century.

About Machine Learning Research at IISc

Research related to machine learning in the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science has a long history and goes back to the early 1980s. Initial research interest revolved around designing automatic controllers for process control. Over the years, several more faculty and students became interested in machine learning, leading to increasing numbers of high quality publications in machine learning and related fields, and to several successful alumni with expertise in machine learning coming out of the department. In recent years, the department has emerged as a leading destination for talented students interested in machine learning research. Indeed, in addition to publishing high quality research in top-tier venues, several student-led teams have won awards in international machine learning contests, including the ACM KDD Cup in 2003 and 2006. More recently, a research collaboration between members of CSA and IBM Research India led to the Best Paper Award at SDM 2011. With the growing strengths in machine learning in the department and increasing interest in the field, it was decided to evolve the machine learning activities in the department into a Special Interest Group in early 2012. The Machine Learning Special Interest Group IISc aims to further high-quality research in machine learning and related fields. Machine learning research-groups are also active in the departments of Electrical Engineering, Electrical Communication Engineering and the Supercomputer Education and Research Center at IISc.
